Elements of an “Ideal” Definition of AKI Potentially Captured in Future Administrative Data. An idealized future definition of AKI would include descriptive elements able to identity cause, severity, chronicity, type, timing, and context. Given current limitations in clinical phenotyping and coding structure, severity of injury and the context in which it occurs (e.g. cardiac surgery, sepsis, contrast) may be the best initial targets to pursue.
